September 29 - World Day of Oil

Composed of hydrocarbons and cultivated within sedimentary rocks, oil appeared millions of years ago from the erosion of the earth's crust and the pile of organic debris derived from plankton and animals debris that lodged in the seabed.

This valuable mineral was popularly known as black gold, but its meaning is derived from the Latin, by combining two words: oleum (oil) and petra (rock), rock oil or petroleum.

To form a deposit are required more than ten million years, that time can reach 400 million years. The deposit is an accumulation of oil within a sedimentary rock, in abundance.

The oil today

Through its refining process that basically separates into fractions and eliminates impurities, and through its end result are obtained gasoline, diesel, kerosene, naphtha, synthetic fabrics, insecticides, medicines, paints, explosives and plastic, base for many of our products everyday.

Currently, oil is the main source of energy used in the world and key item for turning the Brazilian industry gear.

Sugarloaf has estimated 1 billion barrels

"A billion barrels to the oil industry, is a giant breakthrough," said Vice President of Public Relations at Statoil PetroPUC.

Rio - The Vice President of Public Relations Statoil, Mauro Andrade said on Monday, 2 that the prospect of Sugar Loaf, the pre-salt Campos Basin, has an estimated housing of 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) recoverable.

The prospectus is still in the process of delimitation in exploration and production should only start after 2020. It will be one of the areas that will help Petrobras to boost production in the next decade. The prospectus is operated by Repsol (35%) in partnership with Statoil (35%) and Petrobras (30%).

"A billion barrels to the oil industry, is a giant breakthrough," he said in PetroPUC, event with lectures on the oil and gas sector organized by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). Sugarloaf is the name of the pit where it was discovered the reservation, located in deep waters, and was confirmed in 2012. Are nearly 10 kilometers deep - 2.9 kilometers blade waterline.

The consortium estimates that the 1 billion barrels, 700 000 others are oil and 3 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas. The 195 kilometers separating the area from the coast can cripple the construction of a pipeline, and in this case the company would re inject the gas in the well, said Andrade.

Three wells have bBeen drilled (Seat, Gávea and Pão de Açúcar). Although there is no declaration of commerciality, the next wells should only delimit the area, without major changes in the reserve estimate. The volume in situ (on-site) has not yet been calculated.
