Industrial production increased 0.7% in August

After timid resumption in July, the Monthly Industrial Production (PIM), calculated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), points to a new pace of improvement in the economy. The indicator points to a rise in production of 0.7%, recovering some of the losses from the first half of this year.

For the year, the result is still negative: decrease of 3.1% in production. Compared to the same month last year, the number is even lower, down 5.4% in the production.

Primarily responsible for this positive result is the sector of intermediate goods increased 1.1%, breaking a run of four consecutive declines. This industry segment manufactures products that are used as inputs for other industries such as the electronics, auto parts or yeast.

The segment of capital goods, which reflects the investments of the industry itself in machinery and equipment, remained stable and the sector of consumer goods produced 0.8% less.

Industry turnover and improves capacity utilization

The recovery in July has to do with the largest number of working days in the previous month, according to the National Confederation of Industry.

The utilization capacity and revenues of Brazilian industry rose in July from the previous month, partly due to the greater number of working days compared to June, said on Thursday (4) the National Confederation of Industry (CNI).

The utilization capacity of the industry rose to 81% in July, interrupting a sequence of five months of decline, according to seasonally adjusted data, compared to a revised 80.4% in June.

The seasonally adjusted real income advanced 1.2% in July compared with the previous month, after the sharp drop of 6.3 percent in June.

Hours worked in production increased by 2.6% and employment fell 0.2% in the same comparison. Salaries already fell 0.2%, while the average real earnings increased 0.1%

CNI attributes part of the improvement of the industrial fewer working days in June compared to July indicators, due to the hosting of the football World Cup, returning to emphasize that the situation remains of difficulty.

"Even with the growth in hours worked, billing and use of the industrial park, the picture of the industry is still cool-down", the entity assessed by note.

Until July, sales of the industrial sector decreased by 5.1% compared to the same period of 2013, while hours worked in manufacturing fell 2.3%.

Industrial employment shrank by 0.6% from January to July compared with the first seven months of 2013, while wages fell 0.2% in the same comparison, informed the CNI.

With sharp decline in industry and investment, Brazil's economy declined by 0.6% in the second quarter of 2014 and 0.2% in the first quarter over the previous quarter, leading the country to enter into a technical recession for the first time in five years, according to the IBGE.

The industry, specifically, had a decrease of 1.50% last quarter over the previous period, with contraction of 3.4% versus the second quarter of 2013, on data that reinforce the great difficulty in growing the sector.

On Tuesday (2), IBGE reported that Brazil's industrial production grew again in July after five consecutive months of decline, an increase of 0.7% compared to June, also favored by the weak comparison basis.

CNI prioress projection

A technical recession of the Brazilian economy in the first half and the poor performance of the industry in the period led to CNI worsening projections for economic activity this year.

The organization now sees gross domestic product (GDP) advancing just 0.5% this year from a previous forecast of 1% expansion. For the industrial sector, CNI estimates contraction of 1.7%, against a previous forecast of a decline of 0.5%.

Dilma says Petrobras is above crimes and misdeeds

The president says you can not confuse people with the institutions, after Petrobras director choose to award tipoff.

After former Petrobras director Paulo Roberto Costa decide to whistleblower award, the candidate for reelection Dilma Rousseff said on Sunday, 24, that "you can not confuse people with the institutions" and that the state is above any misconduct committed by its members.

"Petrobras is much greater than any of her agent, either director or not, who commits mistakes, crimes-or, if it is judged that proves he was convicted. This does not mean a conviction of the company. Do not confuse people with institutions", said Rousseff, who called a press conference yesterday morning at the presidential palace.

"Brazil and we all have to learn that people make mistakes, ill-made, crimes, acts of corruption, it does not mean that institutions have done so even in the institutions -. either - and companies - even those that you work - it can happen, "continued PT, addressing reporters.

The Federal Police last week sparked the fifth phase of the operation Lava Jato, scouring addresses of 13 consulting firms, management and advisory services, linked to a daughter, a son in law and a friend of former director of Petrobras. The Prosecution pointed "Giddy equity increase" of these companies at the time Costa was director of Petrobras.

The Lava Jet investigates suspected existence of an alleged billion reais laundering scheme.

"There is no institution above reproach when it comes to its members. Because men and women is that fail, are not necessarily the institutions", said Rousseff. "Petrobras is above that. I do not have to comment on the decision of a person arrested or do not award tipoff, this is not the object of interest of the Presidency of the Republic."

Yesterday, we marked the 60th anniversary of the death of Getúlio Vargas (1882-1954), the President had lunch at the presidential palace with writer and journalist Lira Neto, author of a biographical series on the former president. The only campaign activity was the press conference.

"I'm at the end of the third book on the Getúlio and consider this masterful trilogy, because it is extremely well written, but also the research conducted, we see research that detailed, was in the annals of Congress survey of primary sources," said Dilma , noting that a country is made of its "history, memories and their political leaders."

"I believe that if we do not understand the history of our country do not understand the construction of the Brazilian nation. Lira Neto This book is important," he said.

Dilma ended the press conference promising to call the reporters covering the presidency to eat noodles. In election time, the candidate appeared placing noodles on a platter in an effort campaign to humanize it and bring it closer to the reality of the voters. "You'll like it, I call (to eat noodles) and accept criticism," he said, good-naturedly.
